DefectRecord organizes the public files of NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI): the complaints file, the two recalls files, and the investigations file, refreshed monthly. The files are U.S. Government public domain.
Counts, systems, campaign numbers, dates, and affected-vehicle figures, joined per make, model, and model year - plus summaries written by us. Complaints are counted once per distinct report, never per component row.
Complaint narratives, names, VINs, cities, or any other personal information. The raw files contain those fields; our ingest drops them by an explicit allowlist before anything is counted, and a gate scans everything we generate for them before publication.
Recall files name trim-level models and complaints use coarse model names, so a naive join matches only about a quarter of recall keys. We maintain a normalization table - canonical makes, base models, and a canonical component taxonomy - so the complaint-to-recall join on each model-year page reflects the real record.
Complaint counts are owner reports, not failure rates, and are never adjusted for vehicles sold, because model-year sales splits are not a public dataset. We publish no reliability rankings. DefectRecord is not affiliated with NHTSA or any manufacturer; for a specific vehicle, NHTSA's VIN lookup is the authoritative check.
